Performance Etiquette:
- Dress nicely. No jeans, sweatpants or t-shirts. No short skirts. Aside from that, you decide how dressy and fashionable you want to be. Remember the way your carefully choose your outfit can help your stage presence and even your performance.
- Dress appropriately. You may be on a stage and should be highlighting your music and musicality, not your body. Be careful that you dress modestly, knees covered when sitting and clothes are not tight. Also, if you are playing guitar or ukulele, make sure you do not have bracelets or cuffs that interfere with your strumming ability.
- Come to performances having already practiced your performance song at home the same day, preferably right before you came so that you are as warmed up as possible. Vocal students should do sufficient warm-ups earlier in the day at home.
- Use any opportunity you are given to arrive early and warm-up on a different piano, warm-up in a practice room where there are people milling about so that you can “practice-perform” in a warm, but unfamiliar and possibly a bit distracting environment, similar to what you experience during a performance.
- Always arrive 5 min before the time requested so you are not late.
- Bring your music, EVEN IF YOU HAVE IT MEMORIZED! Super important to have during your warm-up/pre-performance time. Sometimes you need to jar your memory or double check something that is unclear prior to performing!
- For students who are new to performing or struggle with performance anxiety, its super helpful to have a water bottle with you to stay hydrated.
