Lessons correlate with the school calendar providing 30 lessons from September to June. Payment is divided equally into 10 payments at a flat rate, paid on 1st lesson of each month starting in September and ending with last payment the beginning of June. At this time, in-home service is only given to HF-L residents within a qualifying radius. Students receiving lessons in the HF-L area must take at least a 60 min slot, with 15 minutes apportioned for drive time. No additional fee will be charged.
How does the FLAT RATE PAYMENT PLAN work?
Students are encouraged to participate in lessons for the whole program to coincide with their academic year. This allows for optimal progress and enjoyment. There are 30 lessons through the school year, 2 group options, performances, festivals, and sometimes ensemble options when working on a duet, trio or quartet. Fees for the 30 lessons are divided into equal payments per month from September to June as follows: $75 mth/30 min and $150 mth/60 min. Spread over the 10 months of the lesson program, every lesson will be paid for by June regardless of whether you had 5 lessons one month and 2 another or any other combination. Payment for each month is requested at the first lesson of that month and required by the 3rd lesson of the month or the teacher reserves the right to discontinue lessons until dues are paid. Any student who cannot continue through the year, must cover the cost of any unpaid lessons, which will be communicated via invoicing. Check, cash, *PayPal or Venmo is accepted. Should you have financial limitations that prohibit you from being able to pay the standard fees, including having more than 2 children taking lessons, a number of alternatives can be made to keep costs of lessons lower. How much practice is recommended at home?
Taking lessons requires time at home to do the drills, fingerwork, vocal work, exercises and songs that your teacher has shown you and written down for you. You should plan to get practice in every day with a minimum of 4 days a week. Parents and students, please make sure you understand the commitment lessons require. There are a number of fun and interactive challenges through the year to set goals and accomplish them alongside other students.
What should I expect on my first lesson?
You will officially meet your teacher and discuss more in-depth your personal interests in music and types of genres. The first lesson will cover a developmental assessment of skill level, reading and motor skill abilities at student’s level for the first steps forward. If you have taken lessons before, you should plan to play something from your past repertoire so make sure to bring past books, even if piece is memorized, and expect to do some sight-reading. If child is under 5 years of age, the first several lessons will be focused on rhythm recognition, motor skill abilities, musical symbols and aural response. If desired, your student can participate in the Music Bucks Award Program for prizes throughout their progress at the studio and see the Music Store.
What should I bring to lessons?
- A lined notebook for lesson and assignment notes
- Lesson books that you are currently using or that you have used in most recent lessons
- *A recording device on cell phone or other device (*required for vocal students/by request for other students)
What if I can’t make a lesson?
Please avoid missing lessons. When you make your music a priority you will get the most out of it and have the most enjoyment! That being said, when unforeseeable conflicts such as illness, family emergency, inclement weather or unavoidable school events arise, advanced notice is requested so that the teacher can fill that vacant time slot if possible and arrange a make-up or on-line lesson for you the same week. All no-show lessons must be forfeited. In the event of widespread cancelations by the teacher, for such reasons as inclement weather or teacher illness, on-line lessons will be scheduled. If this is not possible for individuals, the cost of the canceled lesson may be dropped or prorated.
Can I do virtual (on-line) lessons?
Virtual lessons may be instituted for any student to make-up the rare, missed lesson through the year, regardless of age and abilities. However, if you are middle school age or higher, do not have a diagnosed learning disability and are above beginner level in your instrument, it is possible to incorporate virtual lessons regularly. Though not ideal for optimal learning over the long haul, on-line lessons have been successful as an alternative to in-studio lessons for older students, who can translate differences in visual prompts, follow audible instructions well and need less physical modeling for progress and have own accompaniment if a vocalist. If appearing in person to every lesson each month would prohibit you from taking lessons and you meet the above perimeters, I can offer you on-line lessons through the year, in conjunction with 1-2 lessons in-person/in-studio a month, determined by recommendation of the teacher. You must be able to use FaceTime or arrange another option ahead of lesson time and must have an acceptable visual positioning for your camera conducive to lesson requirements. All fee schedules and policies remain the same. Any virtual “no-shows” to a scheduled lesson slot will be forfeited.
What about books and other materials?
Books and other materials required for lessons will be an additional cost. The teacher will alert you to the need for student materials as it arises and either ask for reimbursement to cover cost of teacher ordered books or request family to place order for material for their student. Both options need to be fulfilled within 2 weeks of request so as to support your student well. Most book costs for the year do not exceed $60/student, and are often much less. Past books are sometimes used if a student is coming from another teacher and the material is still of value and has a motivating appeal. Recitals, festivals and competitions have additional fees. NewSong Studio has many books and materials that can be borrowed throughout the year for supplemental repertoire so students do not have to buy a book for one or 2 songs they are doing. A log is kept at the studio for borrowed material. It is treated similar to your local library loans. If the studio books/materials are not returned, student families will be charged the cost of the book not returned to cover the cost of a repurchase for the studio library. Certificates and awards are withheld at the end of the year for any outstanding returns/payments for studio book loans or lessons unpaid.
